About Digestive Health Supplements

The processes of digestion and absorption have massive roles to play when it comes to supporting human health. However, the importance of these areas are rarely realised. Poor digestion and malabsorption has the ability to negatively affect practically all aspects of human health, as the gastrointestinal tract is a provider of essential nutrients and harbours the important bacteria that constitute the human microbiome.

Digestive disturbances are commonly experienced, hence the popularity of digestive health supplements, with signs and symptoms that include gas, bloating, indigestion, reflux and heartburn. Despite the inconvenience, these health issues are not surprising given the general standard of the western diet that typically includes high-calorie take-away meals and processed micronutrient-depleted foods, coupled with poor eating habits and increasingly sensitive immune systems.

The stomach is an important part of the digestive system, though it is not where digestion begins. Firstly, the stomach has to produce an acidic substance called hydrochloric acid (HCL) that has a pH of 2. This acid is important and functions as an anti-bacterial agent, knocking out harmful bacteria in the food we eat. HCL also unfolds or denatures protein in preparation for enzymatic breakdown (hydrolysis). Without adequate HCL production, the stomach's defenses are down and digestion suffers. Especially protein digestion. This is just one area of the many within the complex gastrointestinal tract.

The most underrated area of digestive tract is the mouth. Remember when your parents told you to chew your food properly at the dinner table? As it turns out, they did have our best health interests at heart, irritating as those interests may have been. Chewing (mastication) breaks down large food chunks ensuring a greater surface area is exposed to enzymes, making digestion easier. Saliva also contains amylase and lipase, which literally starts digesting food in the mouth. These enzymes begin digesting carbohydrates and fats, respectively.

Have you ever noticed the longer your chew starchy foods, the sweeter they taste? This happens because large carbohydrates get broken down into smaller units, some of which break all the way down into sugars making them taste sweeter. Poor chewing technique puts strain on the rest of the digestive system by offering it larger chunks of food that get less time exposed to amylase and lipase.

There are many factors that can have a negative impact on chewing. For instance, texting or chatting on the phone whilst eating shifts our focus of attention from the act of simply chewing, to chewing and communication. Listening and constructing verbal responses or typing and selecting the perfect emojis to capture your mood shifts a lot of focus away from simply eating. This actually changes the wiring of our nervous system as well, which determines blood flow.

Performing multiple tasks at the same time can activate the sympathetic nervous system, which is not ideal for supporting activity of the organs and tissues involved in digestion and absorption. A greater parasympathetic tone is needed in order to deliver more blood and nutrients to cells involved in digestion. Other common activities that people engage in whilst eating are driving and computer work.

Digestion is how we absorb the nutrients within our food. The digestive system begins at the mouth and travels all the way to the end of the colon. There are many organs and tissues involved, including the salivary glands, oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder and intestines. There are countless ways to support digestion with digestive health supplements, including taking digestive enzymes like amylase, protease and lipase, to break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats, respectively. There are healing agents to protect and support the mucous membranes, some of which are slippery elm powder, aloe vera and glutamine.

There are even natural anti-bacterial agents and powerful probiotics (beneficial flora) that can be useful for pathogenic bacteria overgrowth, the latter of which is useful after pharmaceutical antibiotic therapy. Hippocrates stated over two-thousand years ago that "All Disease Begins in the Gut". The importance of food digestion and nutrient absorption can not be overemphasised, and can be the difference between vitality and apathy on a daily basis over decades.
