About Chlorella Supplement

Chlorella is a blue-green algae native to Japan and Taiwan with an exceptional nutrient profile. Chlorella naturally contains up to 7% chlorophyll, offering natural detoxification effects and a wide range of health benefits. Chlorophyll reduces the toxicity and hyperproliferative effects of dietary haem, which is where the iron is found in red meat, as reported by Carcinogenesis back in 2005. It is believed that the negative effects of haem may in part be responsible an increased risk of colon cancer. Chlorella is a rich source of quality protein, containing 60.5% by weight and containing the nine essential amino acids. Though given that only a small portion of chlorella is consumed, the contribution to a daily protein requirement is minimal.

Chlorella is a rich source of beta carotene, a natural carotenoid composed of two molecules of vitamin A. Chlorella also contains an entire B complex, and is a particularly rich source of Vitamin B2 and B3. It also contains iodine, magnesium, iron, zinc and calcium. Given the nutrient profile, chlorella supplementation is a helpful nutritional aid that may be taken to supplement a balanced diet, much like a natural multivitamin and mineral.

Chlorella has been scientifically researched countless times, with studies indicating that this algae may assist with the management of high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, immune system incompetence and poor wound healing. These potential effects were reported in the Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine in 2001. This creates some interesting applications a safe and readily available natural supplement.

Chlorella may be taken during times of high nutritional demand, such as with increased physical activity or when the diet is lacking. Chlorella can be prescribed by holistic healthcare practitioners as part of a heavy metal chelation therapy to aid in the removal of toxins, such as mercury and cadmium, though it may also assist with the removal of pesticides and herbicides. Chlorella is most commonly taken in tablet form for the sake of convenience, however pleasant tasting powdered products are available, often mixed with other green powders, such as barley grass and wheat grass.
