About Amino Acid Supplements

Amino acid supplements are useful for enhancing sports and exercise and supporting recovery. Some amino acids can even reduce markers of muscle tissue damage, while others can boost the muscle pump experience. The right amino acids can make a great difference in helping you achieve your goals.

Amino acids are abundant in nature. They are found in the structure of proteins in a range of plant-based foods like legumes and nuts, and animal-based foods such as eggs, dairy, seafood and meat. There are nine essential amino acids, which are tryptophan, methionine, phenylalanine, lysine, threonine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine and valine. The latter three are also referred to as branched chain amino acids. Unlike food-based amino acids, supplements have the advantage of being in free-form, which means that they are not contained within a complex protein structure. This by-passes the need to digest and liberate them from the protein molecule, ensuring that absorption is fast and complete. Free form amino acid supplements can be particularly useful when taken before or during exercise, as they are light on the stomach. Furthermore, essential amino acids are a great option for those with digestive difficulties who struggle with eating protein food or protein shakes.

Amino acid supplements can provide us with concentrated forms of one or a few individual amino acids, something that is impossible to find in nature. For instance, amino acids like citrulline or agmatine, without other competing amino acids, simply are not found in any food in high concentrations, and not without plenty of other competing amino acids. This means that higher amounts of one single amino acid can get into the blood, which is helpful when using amino acid supplements therapeutically. You might be surprised at how much amino acids can actually do.
