About Amino Acid Supplements

Amino acid supplements contain a range of beneficial nutrients, designed to enhance sports and exercise performance and recovery. Some amino acids reduce markers of muscle tissue damage, while others can boost the muscle pump experience. The right amino acids can make a great difference in helping you achieve your goals. Specific amino acids can also be used to enhance certain systems in the body, helpful for a range of health conditions. While citrulline and agmatine have been used for the management of high blood pressure, tyrosine is often used for chronic stress and subclinical hypothyroidism.

Amino acids are abundant in nature. They are found within the structure of proteins in a range of plant-based foods like legumes and nuts, and animal-based foods such as eggs, dairy, seafood and meat. There are nine essential amino acids, which are tryptophan, methionine, phenylalanine, lysine, threonine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine and valine. The latter three are also referred to as branched chain amino acids (BCAAs).

Unlike food-based amino acids, supplements have the advantage of being in free-form. This means that they are not contained within a complex protein structure, which takes time to break down. This bypasses the need to digest and liberate them from a protein molecule, ensuring that absorption is fast and complete. Free form amino acid supplements can be particularly useful when taken before or during exercise, as they are light on the stomach. Essential amino acids are a great option for those with digestive difficulties who struggle to eat enough protein food or shakes.

Amino acid supplements provide us with concentrated forms of one or a few individual amino acids, something that is impossible to find in nature. For instance, amino acids like citrulline or agmatine are not found in any food in high concentrations, and not without competing amino acids. Higher amounts of one single amino acid enter the bloodstream faster and in greater amounts, which is helpful when using amino acid supplements therapeutically.

You might be surprised at how much amino acids can actually do. Amino acids are important nutrients for the human body, just like vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. Though there are nine essential amino acids, there are in fact many more conditionally-essential amino acids which the body needs when it cannot produce enough to meet demands, such as tyrosine, glutamine and arginine.
