About Calcium Supplements
When we think of calcium, we tend to think of bones. Some might even think of teeth. And rightly so, as we do need this mineral to support structural integrity of these tissues. However, did you know that we also need calcium to contract muscules? Calcium does a great deal more than support bones and teeth- it is even essential for brain health.
Calcium supplements are helpful for the management of calcium deficiencies and insufficiencies, or when calcium needs are extremely high. Let's face it, it's not always easy to get enough dairy products or plant-based calcium to meet our daily requirement. Some of the best plant-based sources of calcium are the humble sesame seed (tahini paste is delicious), chia seeds, beans, and green leafy vegetables. Regular weight bearing exercise, involving all four limbs, is also important for ensuring optimal bone—and muscle—health throughout life.
