About Cold and Flu Supplements

When cold and flu season is upon us, it is important to be prepared, particularly for the eldery and those with compromised immune systems. During the colder months the viruses that cause the common cold and flu are out in full force, as they survive better in colder environments and in human bodies. After all, we do produce a fever (increased body heat) for a reason.

In winter we tend to spend more time in doors breathing the same air as others. This increases our exposure to viruses in the air that we breathe, making it important to keep fresh air circulating properly indoors when around others with symptoms. This means opening doors and windows, and even switching on fans.

Staying indoors more during the colder months also depletes us of an important nutrient called Vitamin D. Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D), which is so powerful that it functions more like a hormone than a vitamin, regulates the activity of our immune system, ensuring that viruses and bacteria are met with more robust defences. It is important to supplement with this nutrient when sun exposure is minimal.

There are many natural compounds that have direct anti-viral activity, such as extracts from garlic and the mineral zinc. These compounds work directly against the virus, slowing replication which allows the immune system a better chance at overcoming the foreign invader. Additionally, anti-bacterial compounds are often helpful during more serious viral infections, when a secondary bacterial infection can occur. Such compounds are extracts from Garlic and Manuka Honey (or any raw untreated honey). In fact, raw garlic mixed into honey can be a potent therapy if you're game!

There are a host of natural supplements that assist with maintaining general immunity. Many nutrients are needed for leukocyte (white blood cell) production in the bone marrow and for the healthy activity of these cells. Such nutrients are vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, selenium and Vitamin A as retinol (not beta-carotene). There are many immunoregulatory herbs, such as andrographis, echinacea and cat's claw, that may assist with general immunity to improve host defences against viruses and bacteria.

Despite the power of natural anti-viral and anti-bacterial compounds, it is crucial to take a giant step back and with as much objectivity as possible take a look at your lifestyle and diet. A healthy balanced diet, regular exercise, sunlight exposure, quality sleep and stress management are essential for supporting a healthy immune system.
