About Memory & Concentration Supplements
These days, few could say that they don't have memory and concentration issues. Though a photographic memory and hours-long razor-sharp concentration are unrealistic goals, we can make the most of our biology. There are many factors that influence memory and concentration, and many available supplements that seek to support them. Physical and emotional stress, mental fatigue, sleep deprivation, poor circulation, electromagnetic fields and of course inadequate nutrition are some possible causes of poor memory and concentration issues.
Many of these can be remedied through changing one's lifestyle, such as taking up meditation or deciding that sleep is more important than the most recent episode of your favourite TV series. Often a little supplemental support can be helpful in getting the ball rolling, and this help can come in the form of herbs, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, fatty acids and specialised phospholipids.
Herbs like Ginkgo biloba, which support blood flow to the brain, help to enhance nutrient and oxygen delivery. Other compounds like acetyl-l-carnitine cross through the blood brain barrier and donate acetyl groups for the synthesis of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is important for concentration and is believed to be helpful for memory. Then there is docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is found only in seafood, especially fatty fish. We produce EPA within our body, from an essential omega 3 fatty acid called linolenic acid, however, we can not produce enough for optimal health.
Approximately one per cent of the linolenic acid that we consume through our diet (few eat enough) is used to create DHA. DHA literally sits within the outer fatty membrane of our cells and helps to increase fluidity, which is important for the functioning of the receptors and general cellular health. And guess what? If the cells are healthy, we are healthy, and our memory and concentration tend to work more efficiently.
Memory and Concentration Supplements may combine any number of herbs, nutrients and antioxidants to support the flow of blood and nutrients to the brain, or to increase the content of nutrients in the blood that support brain function—or both. In fact, recent research has suggested that Brahmi, a great herb to support new information retention, actually increases blood flow to the brain via enhancing nitric oxide. This was reported in the Annals of Neuroscience in 2017. Then there are amino acids that support this process as well, like citrulline malate.
Age-related vascular signs and neuronal damage can also be assisted with particular remedies. Some memory and concentration Supplements may also contain adaptogenic herbs, such as Rhodiola or Ashwagandha to help the body adapt to a stressful situation that may compromise neural or vascular health.
