About Intra-Workout Supplements

Intra-Workout Supplements are a diverse range of products that cater to the differing needs of various sports and exercises. As each activity presents its own set of physical and metabolic challenges, selecting the most suitable product to meet your needs is an absolute must.

Rigorous exercise puts the muscles and nervous system under a great deal of stress, taking it out of a balanced physiological state. Amino acid levels fluctuate, oxidative-stress can spike and stress hormones can peak. So it makes sense that during this time of need we support our body in the best way possible to maximise—not only performance—but recovery once the activity is complete. There are a number of natural compounds that assist with this process, such as amino acids, plant-extracts, and specific vitamins and minerals.

Strenuous exercise creates peaks in hormones called glucocorticoids, one of which is called cortisol. This hormone has gained a bit of a bad reputation over the years, and is actually very beneficial for us (if levels do not become too high for too long), as it helps us to manage stress properly. However, one side-effect of cortisol is that it stimulates muscle protein breakdown, which is not so good if you want to maintain or build muscle mass. This is why cortisol is termed a catabolic hormone. One of the most efficient ways to minimize the side-effects of cortisol-induced muscle catabolism during exercise is to sip on essential amino acids during exercise. After all, this is essentially why muscle tissue is broken down, to provide our body with needed EAAs. So if we supply them through supplements, there is simply no need to catabolise muscle protein quite as much. Skeletal tissue is actually an important reservoir of EAAs.

During aerobic exercise, electrolyte and carbohydrate supplements can be particularly useful for maintaining adequate blood volume and blood glucose, respectively. If either one of these drops, even to a small degree, exercise performance can be impacted significantly. Of course, hydration becomes more of an issue when exercising in the heat, or when appreciable amounts of sweat are lost from the body. The key electrolytes that are lost in sweat are sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, and to a lesser degree calcium. If these are not replenished, through food or supplementation, then levels of these important minerals will decline over time. That’s why a quality balanced diet, and supplementation during periods of extreme exercise, are the perfect recipe for mineral homeostasis.

There are many other popular products used during exercise, such as BCAAs, glutamine and taurine. If you're ready to tear through your sessions with absolutely no regard for self-set limitations, give intra-workout supplements a go.
