About Premenstrual Supplements
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a group of symptoms that occurs between ovulation and a period. PMS may include breast tenderness, fluid retention, lethargy, depression and other mood changes, as well as food cravings. In some cases, the effects of PMS can be severe, dramatically affecting mood, relationships and even employment status.
Fortunately, there are some simple tactics that may be used to ensure this time of the month is less of a challenge. For instance, The Iranian Journal of Nursing and Midwifery Research investigated the use of vitamin B6 and magnesium for the treatment of PMS, which resulted in a reduction in symptom scores of nearly 60%, having the greatest effect on depression. Not bad for two well-known, readily available and safe nutrients!
Health Promotion Perspectives reported in 2015 that magnesium, vitamin D and calcium status were compromised in PMS sufferers, making dietary sources and/or supplementation for these nutrients integral. Furthermore, breast tenderness, fluid retention and heavy monthlies have been linked to estrogen excess, which may be modulated with the use of Vitex agnus castus (Chaste Tree). This herb is particularly indicated in cases of elevated and prolongued psychological stress.
