About Supplements for Skin Conditions
The integumentary system (skin) is actually the largest organ in the human body, despite the fact that the skin is only a few millimeters thick. The average person's weighs approximately 4.5kg and contains hair, nails and exocrine glands, such as the sweat glands. The skin performs a wide range of crucial tasks for the human body, such as protection from the sun's radiation via the melanin skin pigment and safeguarding against foreign invaders, such as bacteria and viruses. It also offers important structural support for the body, as it would be hard to keep ourselves together without skin!
Many pathologies can occur within the integumentary system, such as ulcerations or burns, and atopic (allergic-related) disorders, including eczema and dermatitis. Age also affects the physical properties of the skin, such as the health of the collagen. Our appearance is determined to a large degree by our skin, and for this reason many supplements have become available that aim to optimise the health of this large organ.
Some of the most important natural health products for general skin health are Omega 3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, zinc, vitamin C, hydrolysed collagen, as well as a range of depurative (blood cleansing) herbs, such as Burdock and Marigold. Many of these essential nutrients are lacking in the diet's of Australians, particularly Omega 3 fatty acids and zinc.
