APS Acetyl L-Carnitine - So Much More than a Fat BurnerDividerimage

Acetyl L-Carnitine has been all the rage for decades now, mostly due to its fat burning actions. This is one of the many supplements that most companies release onto the market, with APS not exception to the rule. This is one of those products that we see being held by an athlete with impossibly shredded abs, and usually shinning white teeth and a killer smile to match.

But does Carnitine necessarily do what it supposed to? Or are our hard earned dollars being washed away with each scoop, betrayed by the promise of a more lean and muscular version of you?

Acetyl L-Carnitine is also known as ALCAR or ALC. It is an engineered form of L-Carnitine with an acetyl group attached. L-Carnitine itselfis a dipeptide made from the 2 essential amino acids methionine and lysine. APS Acetyl L-Carnitine is available in a 100g or 250g tub and can be mixed with water, though it is better mixed with a flavoured pre-workout or intra-workout.

This is due to the slight pungent/sour flavour of this dipeptide, which comes from the sulphur naturally found in methionine.

APS-Acetyl-L-Carnitine.jpgAPS Acetyl L-Carnitine is a pharmaceutical grade product. This is a major benefit to users as it means that this supplement has been made using good manufacturing practice standards and contains no unknown substances or additives.

This grading also means that this product is safe and 'clean', which is important when you are trying to look after your body, and especially if you have a competition on the horizon.

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis published in Obesity Reviews in 2016 indicated that Carnitine supplementation led to an extra 1.33kg of extra weight loss when compared to placbo.

These types of research papers are great indicators of efficacy, as they review all of the previous research, of which there can sometimes be hundreds of papers, and crunch the numbers for us.

Acetyl L-Carnitine transports fatty acids into the metabolic centre of the cell, the mitochondria. This is the function that is believed to lead to the additional weight loss.

However, improving mitochondrial function has also been linked to increased energy levels, which may lead to more intense or lengthier exercise sessions, which could also contribute to weight loss.

Research into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome has shown that this dipeptide can improve outcomes after only 4 to 8 weeks of supplementation. This is likely due to its ability to support mitochondrial function and energy boosting ability.

This was reported in Neuropsychobioogy all the way back in 1997!

So far we have this interesting compound down as an energy booster and fat burner. If this is not enough evidence is also pointing towards it as a nootropic or cognitive enhancer. This may be due to its ability to donate acetyl groups in the brain, for acetylcholine synthesis.

Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter associated with learning and memory. Or, it may be due to the mitochondrial-supportive effects on neurons in the brain.

Nutrients published a paper in 2018 indicating that Acetyl L-Carnitine reduced mental and physical fatigue in older adults, and also supported increases in muscle mass and decreases in overall body mass, which points towards reduced bodyfat and/or excess fluid.

These are great results, and show a potential anabolic role for this dipeptide.

Other research is also showing glutathione boosting ability for Acetyl L-Carnitine. Glutathione is the most powerful antioxidant that our body produces, and guess what increases our need for antioxidants? Aerboic exercise! Research is also indicating that this product can support low moods and support nerve health.

Interestingly, vegan and vegetarians tend to have lower levels carnitine in their system, as the main dietary sources are meat and fish. This is where supplementation can be particularly handy.

APS Acetyl L-Carnitine is mixed with water and comes with a handy scoop to make sure you measure your dose correctly. The dosage of this product is 1 1/2 scoops mixed with water or other flavoured amino/pre-workout drink, taken once daily.

Acetyl L-Carnitine is most effective when taken on an empty stomach about 20-30 minutes prior to cardiovascular exercise. This product is unflavoured.

APS acetyl l-carnitine is a very effective way to help you burn fat, increase your energy, improve your performance, boost cognitive function, support antioxidant status and even help with body composition as we age. It is great as it is a 'clean' supplement, containing nothing else but 100% high grade Acetyl L-Carnitine.

This product is suitable for vegetarians. At only 36 CENTS PER SERVE based on a 250g tub, this low-cost product is well worth the many, many benefits that can be experienced.
