About Omega 3 Fish Oil
Omega 3 Fish Oil contains activated omega 3 fatty acids, called eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are specialised lipids that are actually synthesized within the human body from an essential fatty acid called linolenic acid. Linolenic acid is found in high concentrations only in a few foods, which are chia seeds, linseed (flaxseed) and walnuts. Only a limited amount of DHA can be produced in the human body, with scientific estimates placed at 1% bio-conversion from linolenic acid.
Because EPA and DHA are not essential fatty acids, we do not need to consume them in order to survive. However, scientific evidence suggests that we do need EPA and DHA, either from food or supplements, to achieve optimal health and prevent chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis and dementia. The diets of those residing in developed nations tend to be low in the Omega 3 linolenic acid. Westerners tend to overeat Omega 6 rich foods, such as conventionally produced meats and grains.
Omega 3 Fish Oil is a convenient way to ensure your daily EPA and DHA intake are optimal, without having to consume fatty fish most days of the week. A regular fish oil intake optimises the Omega 3 to 6 ratio, promoting anti-inflammatory responses in the body. Of course, it is always ideal to optimise the diet, removing Omega 6 sources and introducing foods with a high Omega 3 content in order to attain optimal health.
