About Reflux and Indigestion Supplements
Reflux is the regurgitation of the contents of the stomach up into the oesophagus and sometimes even the mouth. This bolus of masticated food contains a strong acid called hydrochloric acid, which the oesophagus is not anatomically designed to handle. If these acids make their way into the mouth, they can also erode the enamel of the teeth contributing to dental issues. Some of these acids may also be inhaled through regular breathing, which places considerable stress on the lungs.
Indigestion is a broad term used to describe general feelings of bloating and abdominal discomfort. This is typically related to over-eating, the over-consumption of rich or spicy foods, and even eating too quickly without proper chewing. Whatever the cause, the end result is a burden of food that the gastrointestinal tract is struggling to handle. After all, the amount of acids and enzymes that we produce is in limited supply.
Some of the most helpful treatments for reflux are soothing and healing herbs, such as slippery elm and aloe vera, which are rich in mucilage. Mucilage has a demulcent effect, meaning it adheres to mucous membranes and protects them from acid damage, giving them a chance to heal. L-Glutamine can also be helpful in providing a fuel source for intestinal cells (enterocytes) to heal.
Digestive enzymes are particularly indicated for the treatment of indigestion, as they contain the basic pancreatic enzymes, which are protease, amylase and lipase. These enzymes assist with the digestion of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, respectively. These enzymes are now available as purely vegan sourced. Some products also add paw paw sourced papain, pineapple sourced bromelains and kiwi derived actinidin, which are all proteolyic enzymes.
Cultured foods are always helpful for supporting overall digestive health. Example of these live foods are kefir and saurkraut, or the use of a high-strength probiotic. Beneficial bacteria are required for general gut health and to support healthy digestion, with effects that even extend to our mood. Increasing the protein content of the diet, and decreasing carbohydrate intake, may also provide relief over time.
The G-Cells in the stomach produce a valuable neuropeptide called Gastrin, which heals and thickens the mucosa of the stomach. The mucosa protects from the harsh (though necessary) effects of hydrochloric acid, helping to reduce indigestion. The G-Cells are responsive primarily to dietary peptides derived from protein rich foods.
