About Electrolyte Replacement Supplements

Electrolytes are powerful supplements to fight dehydration and for enhance sports and exercise performance. The Canadian Journal of Applied Physiology reported in 1999 that less than two per cent dehydration can negatively impact performance, leading to an increased heart rate, body temperature and perceived exertion. As you can probably imagine, it's impossible to perform at your peak when dehydrated, especially given the negative impact on coordination.

Whenever fluid is lost, five key electrolytes go with it, which are sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. The most effective way to rehydrate after fluid losses is with the use of an electrolyte supplement containing a small amount of sugar. Electrolytes and sugar increase our uptake of water, making hydration faster and more efficient. Sugar usually comes in handy too when training hard, especially during long duration aerobic training. During these events, glycogen (sugar) stores can become significantly depleted, which can reduce performance.

There are sugar-free electrolyte formulations available for anyone avoiding these ingredients, such as Endura Hydration Low Carb Fuel. Some of the Sporty's Health electrolyte formulas contain amino acids, which can a great ergogenic aid. Some of these may be the branch chain amino acids, citrulline and beetroot extracts to provide natural nitrates.

Electrolyte supplements are not only useful for athletes and recreational trainers, but also tradesman and people living in hot humid climates to ensure adequate hydration. Basically, whenever we sweat a lot or lose fluids from the body, electrolytes can be helpful. Occupations that may find these supplements beneficial are insulation and air-conditioning installers, roof tilers and labourers, particularly in the warmer months of the year.
