Vitamin B12 or Cyanocobalamin plays a role in the breakdown of fatty acids and amino acids to produce energy. It has a close relationship with folate as they both depend on each other. Vitamin B12 is especially important to the production and maintenance of the myelin sheath that protects nerve cells, red blood cell formation and in mental ability. Vitamin B12 deficiency is known as "pernicious anaemia" as is most common in vegetarians and vegans as it is only found in animal food sources. Symptoms of B12 deficiency include: anaemia, tiredness, smooth tongue, depression and degeneration of peripheral nerves.
