About Soluble Fibre Supplements
There are two types of fibre that are naturally found in a wide range of foods: Insoluble fibre and soluble fibre. Both are important for optimal health, though each of them supports the body in a slightly different way. Soluble fibre is naturally found in high amounts in foods such as Oats, Apples, Citrus, Strawberries, lentils.
Soluble fibre attracts water, which creates a thick gel and slows the digestive process. Due to this effect, soluble fibre can make you feel fuller for longer, especially when taken with food or a protein shake. And with a low calorie content, Soluble Fibre is a great way to fill up if you're trying to shed a few unwanted kilograms.
Soluble fibre functions as a prebiotic, feeding the beneficial bateria that live in our gastrointestinal tract. Prebiotics support the growth and healthy replication of these helpful bacteria that colonise the digestive tract. Two of these beneficial bacteria are the well-known acidophillus or bifidobacteria. However, there are literally thousands of cultures essential to the health of the microbiome in the digestive tract. Good food sources of beneficial bacteria are fermented food products, such as saurkraut, kim chi and kefir.
Soluble fibre is naturally found in high amounts in the bark of a tree called Ulmus rubra, also known as the Slippery Elm Tree. From here the bark is ground to create the popular remedy we know as Slippery Elm Powder. This powder is used therapeutically for a number of conditions, such as heartburn and diarrhoea. Given that this supplement is relatively tasteless, it may be added to protein shakes, smoothies and baked goods without overly impacting the flavour. The inclusion of this interesting product into your daily supplementation regime also helps to lessen the amount of food consumed, due to its filling nature.
