In sun-drenched Australia, who would ever believe that close to 25% of the population are Vitamin D deficient? Well, according to a study of South Australians published in 2014, 22.7% are indeed deficient1. This is based on serum levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, the active form of this important vitamin. It has been suggested that 50% of the world-wide population are vitamin D deficient2.
It is important to remember that most of the vitamin D that we have in our system is synthesized naturally in the body—in our skin—as a result of direct uninhibited exposure to the sun. The diet acutally plays a minor role in elevating our vitamin D status, the best sources of which are wild caught salmon and other oily fish, like sardines3.
Therefore, low vitamin D levels are often due to inadequate sun exposure. Those at the highest risk of deficiency are smokers, inactive, those classified as obese, and of course anyone confined to indoors. Importantly, glass blocks out UVB rays, which we need for Vitamin D synthesis.
So sun through the car window unfortunately doesn't do the job. Interestingly, body fat has a propensity to store the vitamin, which means that serum levels are lowered due to adipose tissue uptake. This means anyone with an excess of body fat requires a higher cutaneous synthesis, dietary and/or supplemental intake. Herbs of Gold Vitamin D3 1000 (IN RICE BRAN OIL) provides a convenient 1,000IU of the active form of vitamin D in each capsule, in a base of rice bran oil to enhance absorption.
Vitamin D is produced in the skin from 7-deoxycholesterol. That's right, we produce vitamin D from cholesterol! This is one of the important roles that cholesterol plays in the body. This inactive form of vitamin D is then converted in the kidneys and liver to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, the biologically active form. One of the crucial roles of vitamin D is to increase intestinal absorption calcium and phosphate, helping to prevent osteopenia and osteoporosis.
This is one of the reasons it has been shown to prevent falls in the elderly. Vitamin D has also been demonstrated to assist in the prevention of multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, diebetes type 1 and type 2, heart disease, dementia, cancer and infectious disease. Not bad for a mere vitamin, right? Well ... more like a hormone, really.
