About Green Tea Supplements
Green Tea is derived from the Camellia sinensis plant, as are black, oolong and white tea. The difference between these four teas is the part of the plant used, as well as the processing and preparation methods. Green Tea is a massively popular beverage backed by scientific research highlighting some amazing health benefits.
You don't have to like the taste of a cup of green tea to benefit from this amazing plant. Green Tea comes in a wide range of forms, including tablets, capsules and flavoured powders that mix easily in water and taste great. These flavoured powders may be enjoyed any time of the day. Green Tea powders may be mixed with plain amino acid powders and taken before or during exercise as a natural alternative to pre-workouts and intra-workouts, with a natural source of caffeine balanced by naturally occurring L-theanine.
Green Tea contains powerful antioxidants that neutralise free-radicals, protecting cellular health and promoting vitality. Green Tea offers natural anti-viral effects, helping the body fight off viruses like the common cold. In addition, Green Tea contains a group of natural plant-chemicals called catechins, one of which is epigallocatechin-3-0-gallate (EGCG). This compound has demonstrated in clinical trials that it can increase the basal metabolic rate over a 24hr period. This means that it naturally increases the rate at which we burn calories, making it a helpful way to maintain body weight or support weight-loss. This effect was reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1999.
Another fascinating feature of Green Tea is a rare and specialised amino acid called L-Theanine, which stimulates alpha brain wave activity. These types of brain waves are useful for promoting calm and reducing anxiety. This occurs by reducing the binding of L-glutamic acid to the glutamate receptors in the brain, as reported in Biological Psychiatry in 2007.
