About Barley Grass Powder

Barley grass is a nutritional powerhouse offering a broad range of nutrients including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes and phytochemicals. This powdered plant supplement is a source of magnesium, manganese, folate, vitamin C, potassium and zinc and has been harvested for over 6,000 years, making it an age-old remedy.

Barley Grass contains chlorophyll and a rare enzyme called superoxide dismutase (SOD). Chlorophyll supports detoxification and assists in neutralising bad breath. SOD is an intracellular antioxidant that is naturally synthesized in the human body that protects against free-radical injury. In fact, it is one of the most powerful natural antioxidants produced by the human body. In order for SOD to function properly, it needs copper, zinc and manganese, as reported by Medical Science Monitor in 2002

Barley Grass is high on the pH scale, which means it's an alkaline supplement. As most people tend to overconsume acidic foods, such as coffee, red meats and white-flour based products, barley grass helps to raise the pH of the body so it becomes more alkaline. pH actually stands for power of hydrogen and is a measure of the hydrogen concentration of a substance, whether it be a food or industrial chemical. As we age the buffering ability of the kidneys tends to decline, which means our ability to regulate blood pH reduces.

It was also reported in Experimental Gerontology in 1986 that the lowered buffering ability of the kidneys with age can contribute to diet-induced metabolic acidosis. Therefore, as we age, more alkaline foods and supplements, like barley grass powder and alfalfa powder, can be useful in order to maintain a balanced pH. A diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables supports helps to increase the body’s pH. Green leafy vegetables, caluflower and broccoli are particularly alkalising. Understanding the pH of some of the most commonly consumed foods in your diet is essential to making long-term improvments to your acid-alkaline balance.

Barley grass may be taken to support general health, assisting with detoxification and antioxidant status, and supporting alkalinity. This is a product that can be used year round, ideally taken on an empty stomach and away from food. However, this product may be incorporated into detoxification programs or weight loss programs for short-term use. Weight loss programs can result in an increased toxin burden, as fat-soluble toxins are relased from adipose tissue whilst the adipocytes shrink and release their triglycerides into the blood stream for energy.
