About Krill Oil
Krill are tiny prawn-like crustaceans that feed abundantly on EPA and DHA rich algae. Just like fish, krill accumulate these algae EPA and DHA in their tissues. Human beings are also a part of this EPA and DHA cycle. Though we produce a small amount of EPA and DHA from linolenic acid, our levels increase dramatically when krill oil, fish oil and specialised algae oils are supplemented or consumed regularly.
There are differences between krill-based supplements and fish oil, however. Krill EPA and DHA are in phospholipid form, while fish oil contains the ethyl ester (triglyceride) form. Though krill contains a lower EPA and DHA concentration than fish oil, the phospholpid form creates a mich higher absorption rate. This phospholipid form of EPA and DHA is believed to be taken up by the brain in higher concentrations as well, promoting neuronal health and supporting mental wellbeing.
Astaxanthin is a powerful natural colour found in krill oil that has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This natural pigment promotes ongoing health, so much so that pure astaxanthin products are available for this natural compound.
A research review published by Hospital Pharmacy in 2014 indicated that EPA and DHA offer cardiovascular benefits. These are lowered triglycerides, reduced blood pressure, increased plaque stabilisation, reduced platelet aggregation, lowered heart rate and anti-inflammatory effects. These effects have been noted primarily through the use of fish oil clinical trials over the coarse of many decades. However, similar results are obtained from a lower concentration of EPA and DHA from Krill Oil, due to its higher absorption rate.
