About Glucosamine and Chondroitin Supplements
Glucosamine and Chondroitin are foundational nutrients for the human body, supporting a range of soft tissues, such as tendons, ligaments, cartilage and collagen. These two nutrients are natural compounds synthesized in the body from glucose and an amine (like glutamine). Just as we need amino acid to build muscle, such as leucine and phenylalanine, we need glucosamine and chondroitin for the building and maintenance of connective tissues.
Glucosamine can be used to manufacture other important compounds such as chondroitin, keratan and hyaluronate. The latter is also known as hyaluronic acid, and can be found added to some cosmetics for its collagen or skin nourishing effects. A research review published in 2012 by Arthritis and Research Therapy highlighted the efficacy of glucosamine for the management of osteoarthritis. It has been demonstrated to be helpful as an anti-inflammatory and structure-modifying nutrient that supports most individiuals with this condition. It is generally well tolerated and easy to supplement in tablet or powder form.
Most glucosamine and chrondroitin products are derived from shellfish. However, there are vegetarian options for those that wish to use Glucosamine, which are typically derived frm corn. Many glucosamine products include chondroitin in the formulation, which work well together, just as we often see vitamin C and bioflavonoids. Other accessory nutrients are often included, such as glycine, proline, lysine, zinc and manganese, to further support connective tissue integrity and healing.
Glucosamien and Chondroitin are often used by weightlifters, powerlifters and bodybuilders, to support healthy cartilage recovery. This is due to the pressure and compression placed on cartilge rich areas, such as between the tips of the bones of the knee. With rapid cartilage recovery and regeneration, the next training session can be met with ferocity.
