About Protein Powder Blends

Protein blends contain a range of protein powders with sustained-released properties. These proteins digest slowly over multiple hours and sustain us over a longer period of time. This is achieved by combining proteins that are digested and absorbed at different rates. For instance, whey protein isolate is rapidly absorbed, while milk protein isolate takes much more time.

Casein is a unique protein that takes time for stomach acids to unravel and proteolytic enzymes to break down. Most of the peptide bonds need to be broken to complete the process of digestion and absorption. For this reason, milk protein isolate is termed a slow-release protein powder. Rice protein is an intermediate release product, elevating blood amino acid levels at a rate somewhere between WPI and casein.

Protein Powder Blends create a prolonged blood amino acid elevation, meaning the amino acids “trickle” from our intestines into our bloodstream. This way, muscle tissue, and other areas of the body, are sustained for longer. The fast release proteins provide the first wave of blood amino acids, while slow release proteins kick into gear a few hours down the track, at which point the fast release protein will be entirely digested, absorbed and assimilated.

Protein Powder Blends tend to be thicker and more filling compared to standard protein powders, due to the fact that they may contain casein and egg proteins. This can be helpful during dieting and to reduce hunger. Casein in particular absorbs moisture well and literally swells up in the stomach, making you feel fuller for longer. For those on weight loss diets, always go for a sustained release protein or a pure casein product.

Protein Powder Blends may be enjoyed as a snack throughout the day, to replace one meal daily and can even be consumed after exercise. The rapidly digested and absorbed protein will get to the muscle fast after exercise, supporting recovery, while the slower releasing proteins will help to keep you sustained over a longer period of time.
