About Supplements For Women

Whether it's premenstrual syndrome, menopause or the life stages of pregnancy and breastfeeding, there always comes a time when nutritional and herbal support can be helpful. The Sporty's Health range of women's health supplements offer premium quality supplements to suit every requirement.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) was largely non-existent 100 years ago, with its prevalence increasing alarmingly since this time. An epidemiological study published in 2014 in The Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research showed that 47.8% of women of reproductive age suffer with PMS, with a rate of occurrence that drastically changes between countries. The French have the lowest incidence at 12%, with the highest found in Iran at a staggering 98%. The signs and symptoms of PMS vary from person to person, though the most common are bloating, breast tenderness, cramping and food cravings, all of which disappear with menstrual flow.

There are many herbal medicines and nutrients that can be of assistance during these times, such as Vitamin B6 (or pyridoxal-5-phosphate), magnesium and Vitex agnus-castus (Chaste Tree). A study published in 2010 by the Iranian Journal of Nursing and Midwifery Research demonstrated that a daily supplement of magnesium (250mg elemental/day) and B6 (40mg/day) significantly reduces anxiety, depression, headache and nausea, plus many other symptoms (compared to the placebo). Magnesium is tbeneficial for the prevention and management of premenstrual cramping, as it relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus. However, restoring intracellular (inside the cell) magnesium levels takes time, which requires daily supplementation for months, rather than sporadic use.

An interesting piece of research was published in 2013 in the Iranian Journal of Nursing and Midwifery Research regarding the effects of 3 hours per week of aerobic exercise on PMS. This study examined the effects in non-athletic girls aged 18-25 years, and involved three bouts of 60 minutes per week aerobic exercise. The study showed that this level of activity could reduce signs and symptoms of PMS by a staggering 33% over a 2 month period. The researchers assessed both psychological and physical markers.

There are many herbal medicines and nutrients that are helpful for menopause, also known as the change of life. Many see this period of tremendous change as a hassle with unwanted signs and symptoms to deal with on top of an already complicated life. However, in traditional cultures it was revered as a time of female empowerment. Nutritional reserves become less depleted each month with the flow of the menses, making it easier to keep oneself nourished and full of vitality. However, menopause can of course present some symptoms that need healthcare intervention.

When it comes to hot flushing, the herbal medicine Sage is specific, while any herb that contains phytoestrogens may be useful. Phytoestrogens are plant compounds that are estrogen-like. When phytoestrogens bind to an estrogen receptor they send a signal to the cell that estrogen levels are fine. This can reduce many of the signs and symptoms of low estrogen, such as hot flushing. Glycine max (soybean extract) and Trifolium pratense (Red Clover) are examples of phytoestrogen-containing extracts.

Raspberry Leaf and a good quality multivitamin and mineral offer great support during pregnancy, with the multi also helpful for general nutrition during breastfeeding. Research published in Australian College of Midwives Incorporated Journal in 1999 indicated that Raspberry leaf supplementation during pregnancy improved the safety of delivery.  Protein and general nutrition needs are higher during breastfeeding than at any other life stage, even higher than pregnancy itself. It is essential during this time that adequate nutrients and calories are provided to maintain body weight and general health. This typically involves a varied diet with regular small meals, and supplementation to assist.
