Varicose Veins often refers to the veins of the legs although they can occur anywhere. Varicose Veins are veins that have become enlarged and twisted. Varicose Veins occur when the legs pump blood back towards the heart and the valves no longer meet properly allowing blood to flow backwards enlarging the vein. They are most common in the superficial veins of the legs due to pressure from periods of long standing. Some symptoms of varicose veins may include: aching, heavy, legs, itching, spider veins, ankle swelling and brownish-blue discolouration near the affected veins.
