The function of the Thyroid Gland is to convert iodine and the amino acid Tyrosine into the thyroid hormones (T3 & T4) which are secreted into the bloodstream where they control metabolism (conversion of oxygen and calories to energy). Overproduction of the thyroid hormones leads to Hyperthyroidism whereas as underproduction of the thyroid hormones is known as Hypothyroidism.
