Selenium is a trace mineral that is required in small amounts by the body for good health. Selenium is incorporated into proteins which are essential in creating antioxidant enzymes such as Glutathione Peroxidase, an important intracellular antioxidant. These antioxidants help protect the body from free-radicals which are formed as a natural by-product of metabolism or from outside sources such as smoking, pollution and chemicals.
