Glycine is necessary for the correct functioning of the liver. Many of the liver's detoxification processes are dependent on glycine as the toxins are conjugated to this amino acid to assist in their removel from the body.
Glycine may promote the healing and repair of damaged tissues due to its high concentrations in both the skin and connective tissues.
Glycine may slow the degeneration of muscle (catabolism) by supplying additonal creatine to muscle tissue. It may improve glycogen storage, thus freeing up glucose to be used for energy.
Glycine is a component of GTF (Glucose Tolerance Factor) which assists insulin to stabilise blood sugar levels. It is essential for the synthesis of bile salts which are important for digestion and is needed for a healthy prostate. As an inhibitory neurotransmitter, Glycine may be beneficial in assisting the treatment of manic depression and may also be beneficial in hyperactivity.
Glycine has been used with traditional antacids to assist in the treatment of stomach ulcers caused by excessive stomach acid.
