Iron is essential for haemoglobin formation, the protein in red blood cells that carries iron to the tissues of the body. Iron is also essential for the regulation of cell growth. Iron deficiency results in limited oxygen delivery to cells of the body, resulting in lethargy, fatigue, pallor and decreased immunity. Women are more likely to suffer from anaemia (iron deficiency) than men as conditions such as menstruation, pregnancy and breastfeeding may deplete iron stores.
