Folate (natural form) or Folic Acid also known as 'B9' is a B-Group Vitamin. Folate helps produce and maintain new cells, which is especially important during periods of rapid cell division and growth such as infancy and pregnancy. Folic acid is also required for making normal red blood cells and in the metabolism of Homocysteine. Folate deficiency in pregnant women can lead to neural tube defects such as "spina bifida", premature or low birth weight babies. Folate deficiency can slow overall growth rate and poor metabolism of Homocysteine can be a risk factor in the development of cardiovascular disease.
