As commonly known Calcium is the main structural component of bones and teeth. Calcium is also essential to many other functions in the body including muscle contraction and relaxation, nerve transmission and normal heartbeat. When blood calcium levels are low the body takes calcium from the bones which can lead to osteopenia (low bone mineral density), and thus to osteoporosis. Other symptoms of calcium deficiency may include: tetany (involuntary contraction of muscles), muscle cramps and spasms, brittle nails, course hair and tooth decay.
