Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids found in the human eye. The highest concentration is found in the macula but they are also present in the lens. In the macula, lutein and zeaxanthin form a layer of yellow pigments (the macular pigments), which serves as an effective natural filter of the most damaging light (near-to-UV blue light) that could reach the retina. In addition to absorbing potentially harmful light, lutein and zeaxanthin also function as antioxidants and may help retard age-related visual loss by decreasing the life-long cumulative effects of oxidative damage to the retina and lens. Recent research revealed that a phototoxic (causing light induced damage) compound called A2E produced by blue light in the process of vision induces cell death in the retina, and that lutein and zeaxanthin act like “tailor-made” substances to block that effect. Blackmores Lutein-Vision™ contains both lutein and zeaxanthin from marigolds, and they are in the more bioavailable form of natural esters. Supplements containing natural lutein and zeaxanthin esters have been shown in numerous human trials to increase the density of the macular pigments. Lutein-Vision™ also contains selenium in a highly bioavailable compound called selenomethionine (the form in which the human body stores selenium). Selenium has an important antioxidant function in the eye as part of an antioxidant enzyme called glutathione peroxidase (GSH). GSH has an important role in preserving the clarity of the lens and preserving healthy eye function. Dosage:Adults - Take 1 capsule daily with a meal, or as professionally prescribed.Children (under 15 years) - Not suitable for use by children under 15 years of age Cautions:Selenium is toxic in high doses.
